Canvas Collage - class photos

Mary and Karen in class, May 2005

Mary and karen in class at Kooka-licous, May 2005I learned many of the background techniques that I teach in my collage on canvas class from a workshop I attended in 2003 with nationally known collage artist, Claudine Hellmuth. Her web site is full of information and ideas, and her two books are well worth the read! I love Claudine's  idea of covering a blank white canvas with some color just to get started and take away that fear of facing the blank canvas. In class I have students combine acrylic paints with a variety of household products that  create wonderful backgrounds on canvas. We use  masking tape, tissue paper, rubbing alcohol, baking soda and plastic wrap! Then we create a collage or two using ARTchix Studio vintage images and charms one or more of the canvas backgrounds they created. You can see my students and my work below, and some of my finished collages to your right.
