The Accordion Fabric Panel Book This class was held on February 7th 2009 at Lenna's studio
Starting with 8 canvas panels, we will gather images on a theme and cover our panels with fabric and trims. Image transfers (like the one you see of the photo of my mom, above) can be created first if you like, and I will help you with that process. This class is based on a wonderful workshop I took with Leslie Riley -and the sample book you see here created by me, was published in The Art of Fabric Books. The panels are placed back to back when completed, with a ribbon binding to create the accordion fold.
This class is held from 10:00am-3:30 or 4:00pm with lunch included in the price of the workshop (5 hour class with lunch = $75)
~ This workshop was held Saturday April 18, 2009 at Lenna's Studio
This is an ALL day class that will include a break for looking at all the art and class samples in Lenna's studio, plus includes a lovely lunch (please let me know of any dietary restrictions you have). You'll learn how to make a star book, which has a sewn Coptic binding, and you will also have time to stamp and decorate the entire book according to your own theme and colors. Bring whatever items you wish to include (photos, papers, ephemera) or use my supplies. Click on the thumbnails above for a sample book. What a wonderful gift this would make for someone very special, or yourself! You'll leave the class with a completely finished, beautiful star book.
There are more star book photos to inspire you right here on this web site - located HERE. The Star Book shown on the top of that page was made for me by Chris Peden, and featured in Expression Magazine March/April 2002! There are also other albums featuring Star Books on my PictureTrail site: Star Books, Star Book Class with Kate, and Star Book Class at The Stamp Studio. Enjoy! This is really an incredible book.
The class will be held from 10:00am - 3:30/4:00pm on April 18th with a break for lunch, which is included in the price of the class.

In this class you will learn how to make Quilties ~ small art quilts, often used for the pages of a soft fabric book. A fabric page or quiltie is a small work of fabric art that’s fun to make but uses only the smallest amounts of fabric, trims, beads and other embellishments.
During class we'll go over
sewn and non-sewn quilties, how to get started making one, themes, what a
quiltie consists of, and what you can incorporate when making one. This is a
great project for all your little treasured bits & pieces! You will make a
number of quilties during the class (typically 4-6) and Lenna will show you how
you can easily put them all together to create a wonderful little book. Or, you
can save your quilties and use them as part of a larger art quilt, or something
else entirely!
See more photos of a finished Quiltie book I made in this photo album on my flickr site.

The No-Sew Fabric Book . . . as featured in Expression Magazine - September/October 2004
This is a class based on an accordion-style Fabric book I created. It was featured in Expression Magazine, September/October 2004 issue, pages 68-71. You are welcome to bring your own fabric, or use mine. We will add lace, trim, and charms. We'll hand sew, fuse and use mostly glue to put our books together. You will be able to create a fabric book with little or no sewing! For all levels of fabric collage experience. If you took my Image Transfer class or have fabric transfers of your own that you've made, you can bring them along to add to your book.
Email me to schedule this workshop.
(3 hour class = $45)
The ATC Book . . . as featured in Expression Magazine - May/June 2005
We will create 8 Artist Trading Cards and a book with a fabric cover to keep them in. The ATC's will become the pages for our book when we place them in clear pockets. We'll do some easy silk ribbon embroidery sewing on the cover and a bit of fabric stamping too. Learn many different quick backgrounds to make beautiful Artist Trading cards and create a unique book filled with vintage ARTchix Studio and Alpha Stamp images. You will find Lenna's ATCs published on the Cover of the May/June 2005 issue of Expression Magazine!

Expand your fun with ATCs (artist trading cards) by using fabric! In this class you'll learn how to create fabric ATCs with no stitching at all (we'll use glue instead) and hand-sewing. I'll also bring my sewing machine so that you can machine sew a few! We can try some already made fabric transfers as the base for our ATCs. I'll give you some history and information on artist trading cards, and we'll use ARTchix fabric and Alpha Stamps fabric images. At the end of the class there will be the opportunity to swap some of the ATCs we've made . . . . that is, if you can give them up! Email me to schedule this workshop.

This class will give you ideas on how to start a collage and finish it, based on various background techniques credited to Claudine Hellmuth. We will combine acrylic paints with a variety of household products to create wonderful backgrounds for canvas collages using masking tape, tissue paper, rubbing alcohol, baking soda and plastic wrap. We will experiment with backgrounds and start a collage in the shorter 3 hour class and we'll have time to do a bit more and finish a collage or two with the longer 5 hour class. Please bring to class: 2 – 3 canvas boards of any size from very small up to 12” x 12”, assorted collage material that you’d like to include (optional), and 8oz of Golden brand matte or gel medium. A few photos from a couple of my canvas collage technique classes are here.
*The 5 hour class with lunch, from 11am-4pm allows plenty of time to create lots of backgrounds and a finished collage. The shorter 3 hour class is enough time to create a number of backgrounds to work on at a later time. Email me to register for this workshop-when I have enough participants I will run it again!

In this workshop we'll will learn about a variety of transfer techniques: packing tape transfers which are easy and fun, and inkjet printed paper (and transparencies) that we will use to transfer onto both paper and fabric with gel medium. We will try immediate transfers and also 'wait and see' transfers. You will create both fabric & paper transfers for use in future projects and leave the class with a better understanding of what works for you, and what kinds of transfers you like to do. We will also try Heat transfers with a burnishing tool and images that have been printed on iron-on transfer paper. You could bring your own images that you would like to transfer; photos are great. If possible, copy them onto matte photo paper using an ink jet printer before class. If that's not possible, bring your images and I will copy a few onto matte photo paper for you. I will have other prepared images for you to try and we will enjoy doing 2 types of gel medium transfers with images on paper, and a gel medium transfer with images printed on transparencies, both to paper and fabric. Email me to schedule this workshop.
(5 hour class with lunch = $75) This gives additional time to create and learn about transfers. Or we can combine this workshop with the No-Sew Fabric book!
(an option is the 3 hour image Transfer class = $45)
Wow! Learn how to stamp on fabric with real leaves and flowers for a beautiful, natural look. We'll use fabric paints and nature items that you've collected (or use some of mine). Please bring 3 or 4 pieces of cloth or clothing items to class. Cloth must be pre-washed with no fabric softener added for best results. Lighter colored fabrics are easiest to print, but certain paints can print on top of darker fabrics too. Natural fibers work best. I will go over heat setting instructions in detail so your fabric stamping will last! Email me to schedule this workshop.

Nature Printing and Shiva Paintstiks
part 1: Nature
Printing on Fabric AND Paper
Using Fabric paint, we will print real leaves, grasses, ferns and flowers onto paper, cards or plain fabric that I provide. You may bring cloth napkins or other items that you wish to print on with you to class; light colors will work the best and pre-washing with NO fabric softener is the best way to prepare fabric for stamping. I will also provide nature items, but you are most welcome to bring a few items to print . . . ferns, leaves, sturdy flowers or grasses. Keep these items fresh in a plastic bag, refrigerated, until class. We will practice printing on paper and greeting cards first, to learn the techniques before moving onto fabric (if you wish). This can be a messy class so wear old clothes! All levels are welcome. Bring any favorite acrylic paints or use mine.
part 2: Shiva Paintstiks!
Learn some of the things you can do with these 'oversize crayons' made from pigment, oil & wax. Shiva Paintstiks can be used on plaster, wood, fabric, paper, metal & canvas, but in this class we will concentrate on using paintstiks on paper & fabric. They come in lots of different colours including metallic & iridescent and colours can be mixed. You may use my set of paintsticks during class, but it would be a great idea to pick up your own set (or a number of colours) to bring and use in the class.
Paintstiks are an oil based paint that dries within 24 hours. After that, you can heat set the paint with an iron when you have been working on fabric (pre-washed). We will experiment on booth fabric and paper. Paintstiks can be used in a number of ways: Applying the colour directly, masking areas with tape or paper before coloring, using stencils, and adding texture with rubbing plates. Different & fun!

The Art Pillow is a great project and/or gift. It's perfect for those of you who have been hesitant to try fabric stamping because I will go over how to use fabric inks and fabric paints and teach you a cool transfer embossing technique! The pillowcase you’ll create is done in collage style with a combination of fabric stamping techniques and transfer methods -- plus we’ll add color to our pillowcases with Color Box Crafter’s Inks. Everything we do can be heat set or is otherwise permanent. The pillowcase and pillow form included in the cost of the class.

Fabric Pendants or Ornaments . . .
as featured in RubberStampMadness Magazine, January 2002
In this class you will create a soft cloth pendant (or ornament) out of muslin. We will paint and stamp the fabric first! Fabric glue is used to put this project together easily. We'll stuff the ornament with fiberfill and embellish the front of the ornament with a sheer ribbon that we'll stamp first. We'll accent your creation with a 14K Gold Krylon marker, and then we'll sew on seed beads the pendant to finish it. Please bring your favorite beads and feel free to use beads I provide for the project. We'll finish this project off by adding a silk cord for a pendant, or a loop for an ornament. You will make at least one of these in class and begin another! An elegant and eye-catching gift for yourself or someone special . . . . .

Using bamboo skewers to create the spine, we will make an unusual journal. First we’ll create the cover, decorating the front with an image if you wish. Bring your favorite or use one I provide from ARTchix Studio or Alpha Stamps. We’ll cut all the pages, insert the skewers and weave them together at the top and the bottom with fibers. We’ll also add beads. I will supply some, but please bring your favorite beads to add. See the sample book photos for ideas on what to bring. This is a cool journal; perfect for displaying photos, your favorite quotes and images.

This is a fantastic “book” with pages based on an ancient origami fold. The covers open up to show off a tea house top. Inside are many stamped and decorated tags that you can pull down to reveal what they say. It’s based on an old fortune telling/ornamental Asian book. this book is amazing, but not hard to do in class with Lenna. Published in the Autumn 2004 issue of ARTitude Zine.
