Paper Stacks: Online Collaboration

I read last week on Seth Apter's blog about his proposal to host an online collaboration; a collection of sorts. Read all about it here: Paper Stacks. Having worked in lots of altered books, art journals, and collaborative journals full of paper and more, I could not resist the challenge to upload a photo (or 2 or 3 or 4) to my blog today. I will notify Seth that I have done this and he will add my link to the list of artists here -go check it out! I love that he calls this post/list: Stackaholics Anonymous!

My photos are sharing only a few of the art journals and altered books around here . . .
I did not want the stack to topple over! Right click on the photo and again if there is a plus sign, for a juicier look.

You are looking at the first book I ever altered, back in 2001 - 10 years ago.

Some of these books are collaborations and some are samples for my altered book classes.

I made more than one stack -I could not resist!

A recent art journal from 2011 in the back, an altered book class sample, a collaborative exchange I am still involved with, a Vintage glue book, a book from a class with Kelly Kilmer . . . .

My most recent art journal, a class sample book, a vintage gluebook and my first altered book.

Hooray for stacks of art!
Thank you Seth, for coordinating. I am proud to add my stacks ; ^ )  lenna

Altered Books - Artful Pages

This week in Artful Pages - 4 artists 4 ways . . .

My first lesson was launched yesterday and what a wonderful feeling! When you have been working hard on something, it's so good to see it come to fruition. My part of Artful Pages is all about Altered Books; how to get started, some page background ideas, where to go from there, plus working with transparencies & gel medium transfers. The lessons are uploaded to a password protected blog on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 4 weeks: one week is devoted to each instructor/subject. I have been trying to do as many of the lessons as I can and it's been great. Each instructor has a different style and a different specialty and its so wonderful to be able to access all of this, in one place. Registration is open as this is an on-going class. There are 7 lessons up on the private blog as of the date of this post - and there will be 12 lessons available to download by the time all of the lessons are uploaded! It is a great value.

There is a flickr photo group to share photos of your work and exchange comments. I hope you can join us! The workshop comes down to just $10 a week as registration is only $40 for 12 lessons. ** If you are already registered and would like to leave a comment on the course, I would love your feedback. Thanks so much!!

Lesson 3: Vintage Gluebooks

This spread in my small moleskine journal is for Lesson 3 in Mary Green's Vintage Gluebook week of Artful Pages-4 artists 4 ways - A collaborative online workshop that I am also teaching. My section on Altered Books is coming up in just a week!

For this lesson we are learning about visual weight. I tried to choose a larger main image printed on fabric for more "weight". I added the flower, the leaves (thanks to my friend Carol van Gerve!!) and the pearls at her feet to keep her 'heavy' if that makes any sense?! The yellow card on the side is printed on cardstock for more weight and the text behind the woman is a REAL vintage letter from 1897 ~ or there abouts. Below is how the background first looked:

Hope Karney's first lesson on ART Journaling is up and looks fantastic -it's on my list of fun things to do tomorrow after our friends leave. I'll be back, we are hosting a party tonight with my parents, Garth & Nora and friends we have made here in Florida, Bean & Chandler -should be fun! I hope you have a great day too.

Lesson 2: color and pattern

Even though I have taken lots of Mary Green's classes before, I'm following along with her lessons in Artful Pages - 4 Artists 4 Ways. Mary motivates me to create! She really knows her way around composition and got me to try Vintage GlueBooks, which I now love doing. All you need is paper and glue! Well, I tend to add a little bit more, but that's okay. For lesson 2, Mary concentrated on color and pattern. Here's what I came up with after reading her lessons and handouts. I started my spread in my moleskine like this, below.

On the right is an over printing technique we learned

I added a wee bit of paint and ink to finished the spread like this-
That's me & my sister in Florida on my grandfather's boat

You can join us if you like, registration is open. Register or learn more here! You'll receive all 3 of Mary's lessons which are already up on the private blog and tomorrow (2/27) Hope's first lesson on Art Journaling is posted. I can't wait!! My week of Altered Book lessons is after Hope's (3/06) and then Lisa's yummy Fabric Page lessons start (3/13). It's awesome!

Our very good friends from NY (Garth & Nora) are visiting so I have stolen some time to do this while they were busy today. Now I'll get back to them! Check out my daily photo journal for a quick peek at the unusual visitor Nora met on our walk yesterday. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Lesson 1: Artful Pages

Lesson 1: Artful Pages, originally uploaded by creativelenna.

As well as teaching the Altered Books section for a week, you'll find me taking this class too ;^ ). Right now Mary Green is teaching Vintage GlueBooks the first week and this is my paper & glue collage response for lesson 1. I'm working in a small moleskine journal and I tried to keep Mary's components in mind while working. I choose some larger sized images because of her suggestions and tried to think about pattern and color. I used both "real" old paper and copies. I was so happy to finally use the couple Mary provided in another class. They are so elegant, don't you think? I haven't done any gluebook work for a while, so this was a treat! Below is how it looked before I added the postage stamp, the vine (free -from Mary's February challenge), The text cut from a book, and the bit of a patterned border (from Mary's Vintage Gluebook class).

I think the additions you see in the first photo really make this better.
Vintage Gluebooks are a new favorite of mine!

It is not too late at all to join us! You can register here: http://4artists4ways.typepad.com/

new book arts workshop starts soon!

and yes, I have been busy writing lessons!
This is a peek into one of my page spreads for my Altered Book lessons -
part of: Artful Pages - 4 Artists 4 Ways which begins on February 20th.

I have been writing & writing and very soon, I will be busy teaching a collaborative book arts class, online with 3 other wonderful artists:
Mary Green, Hope Wallace Karney and Lisa McIlvain. We will be covering different aspects of book arts -Vintage Gluebooks, Art Journaling, Altered Fabric Pages and Altered Books. These new lessons will unfold February 20th - March 18th, with one artist teaching each week, sharing 3 lessons that week. As part of the class there will also be a Flickr group for the students. There you can share the art you create as you move through all the lessons. Your instructors and fellow classmates can comment on it, and in my experience, the flickr group is a friendly, caring and nurturing environment where you can definitely feel safe to share your art. I've always learned a lot and been inspired in the other classes I took that were organized this same way by Mary Green of Green Paper. (She's organizing this new workshop too!) The 4 artists 4 ways password protected blog where the lessons are posted, will stay open indefinitely - giving you plenty of time to work on the lessons at your own pace. You can actually join the class at anytime! The cost is only $40 for 12 fabulous lessons taught by 4 different artists. Go to the Artful pages: 4 Artists 4 Ways blog to learn more about what we will be offering and to sign up. It is only a few more weeks till we begin!

I can't wait to share what I've been making with you -
and how I did it, of course! : ^ )

I also can't wait to read Mary, Hope and Lisa's lessons & learn new things -this will be a great class. I hope to see you there, I'd love to have your support! There are already a whole bunch of students signed up and in the Flickr group. Thank you so much!

Altered Book pages

Behind the scenes, I have been slightly obsessed with working on a sample altered book for the newly announced collaborative workshop called, Artful Pages - 4 artists 4 ways. This obsession is a good thing though, as I generally need to gather a lot of supplies, produce a lot of pages, take a lot of photographs and then glean through everything in order to create top-notch lessons for my workshops. I've learned this is the way I work and my students agree . . .
“I must say this was an excellent class. The lessons were incredibly prepared, well written and extremely helpful photos. I don't think I'll ever journal the same way, ever again." ~ Anne St. Louis in Canada
(Open the Door Photo-Art Journal workshop)

So, I believe I'm on the right track! Registration is already open for Artful Pages - 4 artists 4 ways. Lessons will begin February 20th and will run "live" through March 18th. You'll get one week with each artist teaching 3 lessons during the week - 12 lessons in total on art journaling, vintage gluebooks, altered books and altered fabric books -wow! Let me show you what I've been working on for my lessons on Artful altered book pages.

This is my sample book. It's only 4" x 6"in size,
and about 100 years old. I have been wanting to alter it for a long time.

The other day I worked on gel-medium transfers which is part of  what I will teach you in lesson 3. I had some successful transfers which I loved . . .

and some that were NOT successful! This is the way it goes with gel-medium transfers sometimes . . .

Don't worry, I will show you how to recover from any unsuccessful transfers in lesson 3!! Of course, I'll also show you how to utilize the successful ones:

My lessons will delve into altered books - how to get started, cover the pages with inks, paper & paints, use rubber stamps, papers and ephemera to create a very personal altered book. Oh, did I mention photographs?? Of course you could use vintage images instead, but if you would like to use your own photographs on your altered pages, I am right there with you. My theme was 'family' and I must say I have really gotten into it. I will have a real treasure of an altered book by the time the workshop is complete! You will be given lots of inspiration, step-by-step instruction, tons of samples and ideas. It will be fun!

my grandfather, mother & father

I would love to see you enjoying this wonderful online workshop with me, Mary, Hope and Lisa -
Sure hope you'll go sign up now!
See you in class and on the flickr group!
