Scrap Journals

Scrap or Junk journals are handmade journals created with leftover/scrap papers. The pages are folded in half & bound together with a simple pamphlet stitch < click for printable PDF file. You can also search for “pamphlet stitch” how-to videos on YouTube. The papers for scrap journals can include discarded book pages, leftover gel prints, handmade paper, scrapbook paper, magazine pages or any other kind of paper. Gather a mix of sizes, or use the same size. Choosing different sized paper gives your scrap journal a more eclectic look and inherently allows pages to peek out behind others.

Fold your papers in half and nest them together, rearranging the order of pages until you are pleased. The nested set of pages is called a “signature.” The amount of pages will determine the size of your book. For example, signatures of 6 folded papers would make a 12 page journal. You can create a single signature of pages, or more than one. Scrap journals can be small or large; the journals shared here measure anywhere from 3x4 inches up to 9x6 inches. Directly below are examples of signatures and the pamphlet stitch. Below that are links to specific scrap journals. I hope you are inspired to try making one!
